VanceS: are you having a problem with yours?

AlleneH: Hi everybody

HalaH: I lost focus on the document.

VanceS: I usually hate it until I get to a point where it starts to come together

HalaH: As if sth is pulling me away from it.

VanceS: I'll have to read it again and help out

LawanD joined the room.

VanceS: Hi Allene

VanceS: and here is Lawan

HalaH: I devoted today to have it all together..Give me today and I will email you :over to you"

AlleneH: I'll check it out, though

AlleneH: Thanks for the idea

VanceS: both are recordngs you can download to an ipod or similar and tune in while commuting

AlleneH: love my iPod!

LawanD: proffessional development seems to be a buzz word today

VanceS: I've just recorded a presentation on teacher autonomy

AlleneH: The challenge is meeting the need as the need arises and getting those who have lots of classroom experience (i.e. closer to retirement) to look at new ways to provide the same information to students

VanceS: i figure that precedes learner autonomy

NinaTL joined the room.

NergizK: Nina, do you mean with get you in trouble "Ich liebe dich""?

RitaZ: tell us about your pres in England,Vance

NinaTL: Yes, Nergiz

ConstanGst1 left the room.

LawanD: Did Hala told you her experience coming to Nigeria?

VanceS: I thnk so

VanceS: maybe it's at the tesol site

NergizK: No, somebody mentioned in in YG

NergizK: but I'm getting confused with all the names. So I thought I'll better ask someone before congratulating her :-)

DaveKe joined the room.

HalaH: back

VanceS: I just googled this http://callisediting.wikispaces.com/

DaveKe: hello all

LawanD: Vance, I have been trying to introduce my students to use web 2.0

HalaH: Buthave to go too.Kids at home Sunday

HalaH: I will leave the window open so I will know what I missed.

JamesH joined the room.

VanceS: ok Hala

DaveKe: a question for the webheads

VanceS: wb James

JamesH left the room.

VanceS: Hi Dave

HalaH: Fighting started again on a magazine.

NergizK: Is it weekend for you Hala?

LawanD: Hala going?

RitaZ: hi, Dave

HalaH: See you guys

HalaH: nice chatting with you

RitaZ: nye, Hala!

HalaH: bye

NergizK: See you, was nice meeting you Hala

VanceS: Dave is in China, so we've filled in another part of the world now

LawanD: bye hala

DaveKe: I am workjing on developing an online course and need your opinions

RitaZ: wow, Dave, working there?

LawanD: Dave you are welcome

NergizK: That's good. Now, it's only Australia missing?

VanceS: I think we could link arms if we bypass Oz

NergizK: Lawan, you said you've been trying to introduce Web 2.0 to your students. How is it going?

LawanD: yeh what about south America

VanceS: Rita is in SA

RitaZ: I am from Argentina, Lawan

DaveKe: for a Platform software package to deliver the lessons, can TI work well enough or do I need to use WebCT or Blackboard?

VanceS: Why not use Moodle?

VanceS: or a wiki?

LawanD: ok thats great, the world is here minus Australia

VanceS: or Nicenet

DaveKe: I downloaded Moodle but have trouble ghetting around

RitaZ: Nicenet is a good option, so I heard at a presentation in TESOL

NergizK: Dave, I'm also interesteed in this. I have the same "problem" at the moment

RitaZ: anybody used it?

LawanD: Nergiz, my students are not too conversant with the computer

NergizK: Nicenet looks very boring and limited to me . I'm very visual

BarbaraS1 joined the room.

VanceS: I haven\t used nicenet for a long time but I had an acct mabye 10 years ago

RitaZ: Lawan, its my problem every year, so I start with a classblog

BarbaraS1: hi all

NergizK: Hi Barbara

VanceS: Hi Barbara

RitaZ: hi, Barbara

DaveKe: I am proposing an online course for foodservice workers who need to get sanitation certification for the local board of health to show that they are knowledgeable in food safey

LawanD: yes, you are right I'm also starting with a classwiki

LawanD: Hi Barbara

DaveKe: I want to make it as simple as possible to navigate a computer for the novice

VanceS: I guess Lawan and Dave have similar requirements

RitaZ: it depende if you want it more collaborative, or need more control

LawanD: yes Vance you are right

NergizK: I started with GoogleGroups /GoogleDocs, a class blog and WiziQ for synchronous meetings

RitaZ: I learnt Nicenet is less complex than Moodle, fulfils almost same requirements, is free

VanceS: dimdim has just announced, or been announced

DaveKe: My plan is to utilize TI for discussions and posting of opinions and a program called Quiz Lab or Quiz Star to test knowledge anmd keep grades

RitaZ: would give it a try for distance learning

LawanD: dimdim, yes I just read it on weabheads

VanceS: Nicenet hosts a service, you host Moodle on your own server

NergizK: Haven't heard of it yet

RitaZ: right, Vance, so its easier

NergizK: That's why I don't use Moodle (but would like to)

LawanD: Sorry, I will be away for some minutes, Vance I will get back to you later

NergizK: Can you really compare Nicenet and Moodle?

VanceS: Nicenet is bare bones LMS

VanceS: functional but not flexible

VanceS: kind of like Blackboard

VanceS: Moodle has many possibilities, much more flexible

VanceS: but you might have to host it yourself

DaveKe: but black board and WebCT both cost bucks

RitaZ: never used either, Nergiz, but I heard Nicenet is a simpler version, free, gives basic possibilities for distance educ

NergizK: I have worked with Moodle (as a student) and I have signed up for a nicenet account. Didn't like nicenet.

VanceS: Yes, BB, which bought WebCT, is a dinosaur now

DaveKe: I went into Moodle last nigh and could navigate very well

ClaireB joined the room.

VanceS: Hi claire, and congratulations

RitaZ hugs Clari dearly

ClaireB: hi guys

DaveKe: correction ... couldn't navigate well

ClaireB hugs those who want to be hugged

ClaireB: for what/

DaveKe hugs back

BarbaraS1: hugs claire

VanceS: Did you win an award at TESOL?

ClaireB: last week's news :-)

NergizK: Hi Claire.

RitaZ: congrats, Clarita!!!

ClaireB: vance, how was the presentation yesterday

ClaireB: hi nergiz

ClaireB: hi rita; what a treat to finally meet you f2f

NergizK: Congratulations anyway, Claire. I only read about it yesterday

VanceS: presentation is at http://tinyurl.com/468qrp

VanceS: yes, some people are only finding out THIS week claire

VanceS: not all of us have iPhones

PattiGH joined the room.

ClaireB: hmm, can I help it if my husband is an early adopter?

VanceS: was it the (let me guess)

VanceS: the D. Scott Enright TESOL Interest Section Service Award?

NergizK: I'd love to have an iphone as a Mac-enthusiast. I need to replace my Palm.

ClaireB: thanks vance. i felt very honored because it was from the CALL folks

NergizK: That sounds great

ClaireB: nergiz, actually, my palmpilot would do some things that i can't do with the iphone

VanceS: ok, round of applause for claire

ClaireB: no device is perfect

VanceS: clap clap

RitaZ: clsp clsp clsp

ClaireB: thanks; you're embarrassing me

NergizK: clap, clap.....

RitaZ: ssssssss

NergizK: I'm sure it's well-deserved

VanceS: I'm positive it is

ClaireB: lots other people deserved it too

VanceS: we were talking about it before you arrived claire

ClaireB: thanks for the link vance; I'll give it to my CALL students

NergizK: Barbara, are you the Barbara from two days ago in Elluminate?

VanceS: and I googled claire siskin tesol award

ClaireB: rick, it was good to see you at tesol, but it was only for a fleeting moment

VanceS: and I came up with http://callisediting.wikispaces.com/

ClaireB: and it came up in google?

VanceS: yep, probably shouldn't be public

VanceS: but it's a great resume of your work

ClaireB: hmm.

NergizK: It's not really public, Vance. If click on the link it requests a password

ClaireB: greg kessler said that he had to write something in support of the award, and i teased him by saying, 'and i still got it??"

VanceS: ha ha (and didn't ask me for a password)

NergizK -(

VanceS: but it's great when good work is recognzed

NergizK: Maybe it's because I'm not a TESOL member

ClaireB: lots of call people do amazing work, including several people who are here this morning

BarbaraS1: yees, sorry, i am the Barbara from Elluminate

ClaireB: it's an amazing group that I'm proud to be part of

BarbaraS1: Vance's wife, Bobbi

ClaireB: ah, bobbi; I didn't know it was you!

NergizK: Ah, nice to see you again , then Barbara

BarbaraS1: ty nice to see you too

NergizK checking out dimdim...

VanceS: should we give it a spin?

ClaireB: what is dimdim

VanceS: it's like WiZiQ

VanceS: had its growing pains

NergizK: I've only now heard about it, Clire

VanceS: but apparently is coming out again

NergizK: I wonder why these tools are offered for free..

NergizK: How do these people make money (WiziQ, etc.)

NergizK: There are no ads either

ClaireB: sometimes they start off free and later charge money. like wimba

NergizK: So, get hooked people first and then charge for the service?

ClaireB: exactly

RitaZ: yeah, Nergiz

VanceS: how about Nicenet, free forever

RitaZ: no idea

DaveKe left the room.

NergizK: I think they are probably sponsored by some educational institution or somethign lke that

NergizK: My guess

ClaireB: nicenet started with a grant, i think

VanceS: I know DimDim has a business plan

VanceS: their chatroom has limited access, the free one

ClaireB: what is dimdim, and what is the address?

VanceS: only a few seats

VanceS: http://www.dimdim.com

NergizK: I see

SarahEF joined the room.

NergizK: Like Elluminate

ClaireB: hi sarah

SarahEF left the room.

VanceS: who's going to start a session and invite us?

RitaZ: Vance, would you suggest DimDim for distance learning?

LawanD: back

JamesH joined the room.

VanceS: let's try and see Rita?

NergizK: I can't afford to pay for any services at the moment because I'm offering very inexpensive courses

RitaZ: ok

NergizK: Do you want to try dimdim now?

VanceS: yes, start a meeting

RitaZ: I am trying..

ClaireB: have you guys tried http://www.orgoo.com/Home

NergizK: What's that Claire?

JamesH left the room.

VanceS: orgoo looks like a site to integrate all IM and email accts

BarbaraS1: bobbi_stevens@hotmail.com

NergizK: Maybe everybody has to sign up first

VanceS: it says orgoo is in beta and not public yet

ClaireB: orgoo also has free videoconferencing

ClaireB: yeah, but people are using it. i was in a demo yesterday

NergizK: Do you ever read the "Terms of Use" when signing up?

ClaireB: nah

ClaireB: but maybe i should

NergizK -)

VanceS: terms of us who cares

ClaireB: is there a meeting already in progress at dimdim?

NergizK: In the past I read them very carefully but now I don't

NergizK: I think Rita is trying to invite us

BarbaraS1: I know, i just trust them, that there arent' any surprises

RitaZ: installing a plug in for invites

BarbaraS1: I got mine

VanceS: where are the tools for writing?

NergizK: No problem, we are testing

NergizK: The tools are on the right site of the board

ClaireB: it would be better if the icons for the tools had tool tips

ClaireB: i am not good at figuring out icons

VanceS: I see no tools

NergizK: I have to hide the chat window to see the tools

ClaireB: on the righrt

VanceS: give someone else a chance

NergizK: You can write private messages too

JeffC: should i enable a waiting area?

NergizK: After signing in, you have to click on "join meeting"

VanceS: really bad audio from jeff

VanceS: excellent from nirgiz

VanceS: soud ok now

VanceS: woops, motorcycle again

VanceS: always fun to try new things

NergizK: Yes, I heard that too

VanceS: elluminate is still the best

JeffC: ok... my audio was bad eh

VanceS: yaeh, wonder why

NergizK: As Jeff, said one good reason to use it is sharing your desktop. You could use that when giving instructions on how to use software, rightß

JeffC: elluminate still costs $$$

VanceS: very unusual sounds

VanceS: use http://tinyurl.com/y3eh

JeffC: it could be the ferret i have on my back

VanceS: free to webheads

NergizK: Elluminate is not always a good options because you have to download something

JeffC: elluminate is free for webheads?

VanceS: seems pretty free to me

NergizK: What if my students are in an internet cafe, and I have a session in Elluminate?

VanceS: you do have to be able to install the client

VanceS: that requires admin rights

NergizK: Vance, you say free for webheads. Can any Webhead use it for their lessons?

VanceS: you just have to reserve it

VanceS: I know what you're going to ask

VanceS: http://my.calendars.net/eslhome_conferen = http://tinyurl.com/27jdtt

NergizK: That's why I like WiziQ, no downloads at all. So very simple to join. But regarding functionality (?) I guess elluminate is better

NergizK: No, Vance. I have discovered the calendar already but didn't really know whether I could simply use it for my lessons (too shy)

VanceS: elluminate works best for me

VanceS: I think if you reserve it should be ok

VanceS: if no one else is using it

JeffC: vance... when are you going to start using http://snurl.com ?

VanceS: have used that, for some reason keep using tiny

JeffC: you educators... impossible to change your tech routines!

NergizK: OK: I might use it then with those of my students who are logging in from their own computers.

JeffC: ;-)

NergizK: I've started using it Jeff :-)

NergizK: After you "scolded" us last week

VanceS: there are no restrictions on use, and so far no conflicts

NergizK: I think I'm going to sign off now. Need to stretch my legs a bit

VanceS: me too

VanceS: need to get hom

NergizK: Bye everybody

JeffC: bye

VanceS: bye bye

NergizK left the room (signed off).
